Grants, friendships, and community — twenty-plus years running

Texas Women's League members

For six years, Lyndsey Vasek has watched the Texas Women’s League turn membership dues and gala tickets into real support for Fayette County nonprofits. This year, after previously serving as Treasurer, she stepped into the role of President — helping lead an all-volunteer organization that has given away more than $1.7 million to over 90 local charitable organizations since it was founded in 2003.

TWL runs its grant program on an annual cycle. Nonprofits submit an application and a short video during the League’s yearly grant window, and a review committee made up entirely of non-board volunteers reads through the submissions and selects each year’s recipients — a structure built to keep the process independent of the board itself. In a recent grant cycle, that process distributed $83,000 across 27 local organizations.

“They all do,” Vasek said, asked whether any particular grant has stuck with her — “but especially the smaller nonprofits, where you can really feel the impact of the donation.”

Vasek first got involved with TWL six years ago through friends who were already members, and has taken on multiple roles since. The League itself runs almost entirely on shared volunteer effort — even something like the website, she said, isn’t any one person’s responsibility; the board handles it together.

TWL currently has about 80 members, with annual dues of $45. Throughout the year, the group hosts a mix of fundraising and social events — including a fall golf tournament and a drive-thru dinner — building toward its Annual Gala each spring, the League’s biggest event of the year.

For Vasek, joining the La Grange Area Chamber of Commerce was a natural extension of that work: networking, promoting TWL’s fundraising events, and meeting potential new members.
