In a significant development for the La Grange community, Progressive Health Group (PHG) has announced plans to reopen the former St. Mark’s Medical Center, bringing vital healthcare services back to Fayette County. This move comes as welcome news to residents who have been without a local hospital since October 2023.

A New Chapter for Local Healthcare

Progressive Health Group, a Mississippi-based healthcare organization, has acquired the former St. Mark’s Medical Center property and is set to relaunch it under a new name: Progressive Health of Fayette. The acquisition, which was finalized on August 24, 2025, marks a turning point for healthcare access in the region.

Quentin Whitwell, CEO of Progressive Health Group, visited La Grange this week to share details about the reopening plans. “We are honored to have the opportunity to bring St. Mark’s Medical Center back to life as Progressive Health of Fayette and return healthcare access to the people of Fayette and Lee Counties,” Whitwell stated.

Reopening Timeline and Services

According to Whitwell, the hospital is slated to reopen in January or early February 2026. The initial phase will focus on restoring essential services:

  • Emergency room
  • Pharmacy
  • Laboratory
  • Imaging services

PHG plans to gradually expand into additional specialties and programs, ensuring comprehensive care for the community.

Addressing a Critical Need

The closure of St. Mark’s in October 2023 due to financial challenges left Fayette County without a hospital, creating a significant gap in access to emergency and specialty medical care. Progressive Health Group’s intervention comes at a crucial time for the community.

“This community deserves a strong, dependable hospital close to home,” Whitwell emphasized. “Our goal is not only to reopen the facility but also to invest in its future, ensuring that it thrives for generations to come.”

Community and Economic Impact

The reopening of the hospital under PHG’s management is expected to have a positive impact on both healthcare access and the local economy. County leaders have expressed optimism about the acquisition, recognizing its importance to the health and vitality of the region.
